You may have contributed to politicians you like, or even to a PAC. For better or for worse, that’s a part of the American political system and not something we’re going to debate here.
But when a corporation like RXR Realty and their owners make vast amounts of political contributions, they’re not doing it out of any sense of goodwill or patriotism. Don’t believe us, take a look at Scott Rechler’s political donations (type “rechler” than “scott” and click the “Get Listing” button). Please note: these represent only personal donations — far more money was donated by RXR through PACs and through other family members. For example: type “Deborah” & “Rechler” or “Mitchell” and “Rechler” in the FEC search tool above too). And it doesn’t stop there – here’s a link to Scott Rechler’s Contributions to PAC’s too.
What do these lists tell us? He seems to contribute to both liberals and conservatives, to Democrats and Republicans. So it’s fair to ask, if Scott Rechler is a true believer in America and our political process, why is he spending so much money with both parties?
Only one answer seems plausible – his donations aren’t about passion or support or love of country. They’re about influence, and trying to help his enormous real estate development company get more projects approved. Rechler’s donations are what some of us might call “greasing the wheels.” My dad would just call it “cheating.”

Whatever you call it, you don’t have to be too much of a cynic to wonder, could RXR’s donations be one of the reasons Glen Cove Mayor Reginald Spinello now supports the Garvies Point development that he once so vehemently opposed?
And you don’t have to be a cynic to ask, if RXR’s projects are so above-board and really about “revitalization,” why all the political contributions in the first place? If a project like the proposed Garvies Point development is truly beneficial to the city, shouldn’t giving our politicians money be superfluous?
[Rechler had made] large contributions like a $100,000 donation to the New York State Democratic Committee in April of last year under his wife’s name.

Do you live in Glen Cove? Please – don’t take our word for it, ask Mayor Spinello how he could accept money from RXR – with a billion dollar development on the table – and still remain impartial about the project’s viability? You deserve an answer. We all do.
